Union Academy DECA Earns School-Based Enterprise Certification

Union Academy DECA Earns School-Based Enterprise Certification
Jennifer Sutton Smith

Union Academy DECA has earned School-Based Enterprise (SBE) Certification for the 2025–2026 school year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference this April in Atlanta.

A school-based enterprise is a student-run business that operates within a school and provides real products or services to meet market needs. These enterprises function as hands-on learning laboratories where students apply classroom instruction in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management while developing real-world business skills.

At Union Academy, the school-based enterprise is The Bird Feeder, a student-run breakfast shop that operates each morning out of the Upper School MPR. Students manage the operation by preparing and selling breakfast foods for both students and staff, gaining real-world experience in customer service, marketing, inventory, and financial management.

Through the SBE program, students gain experience in leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and professional communication while learning how to manage the operations of a business. The certification process requires students to submit detailed documentation demonstrating how their enterprise meets national marketing and retail standards.

Union Academy DECA students worked collaboratively with their chapter advisor to complete the rigorous certification process. Levi Carter and Page McGregor were responsible for compiling and submitting the documentation required for certification, helping showcase the work of Union Academy’s school-based enterprise.

DECA’s School-Based Enterprise Certification Program recognizes outstanding student-run businesses and encourages chapters to continually grow and improve their programs. Enterprises can earn certification at the bronze, silver, or gold level based on their demonstrated standards and performance.

Union Academy is proud of the dedication and hard work shown by the DECA members who contributed to this achievement. Their success reflects the spirit of Challenge, Character, and Community that guides learning at Union Academy.
