Friday, May 10, 2023 - Monroe, NC - Union Academy has been awarded the 2022-23 Jack C. Gaster, Jr. Excellence in Athletics Award for the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference for the second year in a row. Athletic Director, Michelle Phifer, was presented with the trophy at the conference Athletic Director’s meeting on May 10. 

The award is in honor of longtime Albemarle High School football coach, Jack C. Gaster, Jr. for his commitment to high school athletics. The award is presented each year to a conference member school for outstanding performances during each of the three seasons. Points are awarded for all sports on the basis of each team's final rank within the conference and in state playoffs.

“Union Academy athletic teams have had an exceptional year in our 1A/2A split conference. Swim, volleyball, and track, along with several other successful teams, were instrumental in leading UA during this year,” said Phifer. 

Championship seasons by volleyball, two individual state champions in swimming, and an individual win in indoor track were highlights of the 2022-23 season, along with conference championships in men's and women’s swimming, women's soccer, and women's track. Baseball, softball, women’s soccer, and both track teams are currently doing very well in postseason play. 

Phifer added, “The commitment to building successful programs is evident by the dedication of our coaches and student athletes in their respective sports in the classroom.”
