Mitchell Inks NLI with College of Charleston

Monroe, NC - March 13, 2023 - Union Academy runner Evan Mitchell signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and running career at Division I College of Charleston.

Evan, originally a soccer player, did not begin running until 10th grade. He participated in both soccer and cross country in the same seasons his sophomore and junior year, so he only ran a few meets each year. As a senior, Evan stopped playing soccer and committed to only running cross country. The results of his dedication to running had an immediate impact on him individually and his team.

"I am excited to be continuing my cross country journey at the College of Charleston,” stated Evan. “The opportunity to represent the Cougars and compete at the collegiate level is an honor that I am incredibly grateful for. I am eager to see where this new chapter will take me and am excited to be part of such a supportive and driven team."

In the spring of 2022, Evan was the anchor leg for UA Track and Field’s first running NCHSAA 1A state championship team. He and his 4x8 relay team finished five seconds ahead of the second place team with a finish of 8:24.05.

On the UA Cross Country team 2022 season, Evan was the Yadkin Valley conference champion as well as the 1A Midwest Regional Champion. Coach Ashley Grant said, “Evan has been a key contributor to both our Cross Country and Track teams over the past 3 years. The determination and grit he displays challenges and promotes a high level of commitment for the entire team.”

At the state indoor track meet last month, Evan medaled individually in the 1000m (3rd), and his 4x4 relay team placed 3rd.

“Evan has put in countless hours to better himself in this sport and it has paid off with the opportunity to now compete at the Division 1 level. I am proud of his growth over the years both athletically and personally, and I know he will go on to be a key athlete and leader on the Cougars team,” explained Coach Grant.
