  • The 2023-2024 MANDATORY NCHSAA Fall Sports Meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 15th at 6:00pm in the High School Gym. 

    A parent or guardian must be present for your child to be able to participate in any contests during the 2023-24 academic year.

    Specific questions are to be directed to your child's coach.

Jack C. Gaster, Jr. Excellence in Athletics

    Union Academy has been awarded the 2022-23 Jack C. Gaster, Jr. Excellence in Athletics award for the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference. Athletic Director, Michelle Phifer, was presented with the trophy at the conference Athletic Director’s meeting on May 10th. 

    This award is in honor of longtime Albemarle High School football coach, Jack C. Gaster, Jr. for his commitment to high school athletics.

    The award is presented each year to a conference member school for outstanding performances during each of the three seasons. Points are awarded for all sports on the basis of each team's final rank within the conference and in state playoffs. award

General Information

  • Union Academy High School Athletics are governed by the rules and regulations of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Union Academy is a member of the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference and offers a wide variety of male, female, and coed teams during the fall, winter, and spring seasons.

    For team participation, annual membership in the Cardinal Athletic Club, an annual physical, and an approved Athletic Clearance are required.

    Each coach receives annual training and can acquire levels of certification through the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).  This training includes but is not limited to CPR/AED certification, Teaching & Modeling Behavior, Sportsmanship and Concussion Awareness. Union Academy received a national recognition for certification of football coaches in the "Heads Up" program, which focuses on safe practices and guidelines to prevent concussions. In 2020-21, Union Academy Charter School was nationally recognized as a Level 1 Honor School by the NFHS for having over 90% of the coaching staff earn certification in additional courses offered through the program.

    • The coaching staff at Union Academy continued their professional development on Friday August 5th.  Dr. Jake von Scherrer with Victory Educational Athletics, spoke to our coaches with an emphasis on focusing on our STUDENT ATHLETES first and the importance of understanding "educational based athletics"

      NCHSAA Mandatory Requirements

      • Per state requirements, in order for students to participate in any athletic workouts, tryouts, practices or contests during the current academic year, an UPDATED PHYSICAL and COMPLETED ATHLETIC PACKET must be on file. Please make sure all appropriate paperwork is up to date and submitted through the Athletic Clearance website.
