Jack C. Gaster, Jr. Excellence in Athletics
Union Academy has been awarded the 2022-23 Jack C. Gaster, Jr. Excellence in Athletics award for the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference. Athletic Director, Michelle Phifer, was presented with the trophy at the conference Athletic Director’s meeting on May 10th.
This award is in honor of longtime Albemarle High School football coach, Jack C. Gaster, Jr. for his commitment to high school athletics.
The award is presented each year to a conference member school for outstanding performances during each of the three seasons. Points are awarded for all sports on the basis of each team's final rank within the conference and in state playoffs.
Union Academy High School Athletics are governed by the rules and regulations of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). Union Academy is a member of the Yadkin Valley 1A/2A Conference and offers a wide variety of male, female, and coed teams during the fall, winter, and spring seasons.
For team participation, annual membership in the Cardinal Athletic Club, an annual physical, and an approved Athletic Clearance are required.
Each coach receives annual training and can acquire levels of certification through the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS). This training includes but is not limited to CPR/AED certification, Teaching & Modeling Behavior, Sportsmanship and Concussion Awareness. Union Academy received a national recognition for certification of football coaches in the "Heads Up" program, which focuses on safe practices and guidelines to prevent concussions.
