Union Academy’s private, high-quality Pre-K program was named Best of the Best by Monroe Enquirer-Journal readers. Teachers with degrees in early childhood education provide a high-quality experience for three- and four-year-old children who are ready to be challenged. Small class sizes – at least one staff member per 10 children – provide individual attention.

The program incorporates classroom lessons with hands-on learning, with a focus on the state prekindergarten standards and kindergarten readiness. Teachers will evaluate each child’s skills and build an instruction program based on his or her needs.

The language arts program focuses on letters, letter sounds and how they come together to form words – all important to build reading skills. Math lessons include number theory and counting actual objects to understand math concepts. Lessons will also incorporate movement, literature and music as children practice problem solving and build thinking skills.

Math

We provide a high-quality Pre-K math program that is engaging, playful, and interactive. By integrating foundational math skills into daily activities and routines, and involving both technology and parental support, we create a robust program that prepares children for kindergarten. Our goal is to make learning fun and adaptable to each child’s pace and interests.

Foundational Concepts

Number Recognition: Teach children to recognize numbers up to 10, and gradually increase as they become comfortable.
Counting: Practice counting objects, fingers, or steps to build a strong understanding of numbers.
Shapes and Patterns: Introduce common shapes (circle, square, triangle) and simple patterns (ABAB, AABB).

Interactive Activities

Games: Use number matching games, shape sorting activities, and pattern recognition games to make learning fun.
Storytime with Math: Incorporate books that include counting, shapes, and simple math problems into story time.
Hands-On Learning: Utilize manipulatives like blocks, beads, and counters to help children visualize and understand math concepts.

Incorporate Technology

Videos: Educational videos that incorporate songs and animations can make learning more enjoyable.

Daily Routine Integration

Morning Circle Time: Include counting days of the week, months, and weather patterns.
Snack Time: Use this time to practice counting snacks or sorting them by shape or color.
Cleanup Time: Encourage children to count the toys as they put them away.

Parental Involvement

Home Activities: Provide parents with simple math activities they can do at home, such as counting steps, identifying shapes around the house or sorting laundry.
Communication: Regularly update parents on their child’s progress and suggest ways they can support learning at home.

Assessment and Adaptation

Observation: Regularly observe and note each child’s progress and understanding of math concepts.
Personalized Learning: Adjust activities and difficulty levels based on each child’s individual needs and progress.

Literacy

We offer a balanced literacy program for Pre-K students that emphasizes phonics and phonemic awareness and is dynamic, engaging, and responsive to the developmental needs of our young learners. By incorporating a variety of instructional strategies and activities, our educators create a rich literacy environment that sets the foundation for future reading success.

Daily Read-Aloud Session

Foster a love for reading and expose children to rich vocabulary and various language structures.
- Interactive read-aloud with picture books.
- Use of big books for group reading.
- Encouragement of active participation through questions and discussions.

Phonics Instruction

Teach the relationship between letters and sounds.
- Alphabet recognition games.
- Letter-sound matching activities.
- Use of songs and chants to reinforce sound patterns.
- Phonics-based storybooks that emphasize specific letter sounds.

Phonemic Awareness Activities

Develop the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words.

- Beginning, middle, and ending sound identification exercises.

Interactive Writing

Encourage early writing skills and understanding of the connection between spoken and written language.

- Creating simple class books with children’s dictations and drawings.
- Practicing writing letters and simple words.

Literacy Centers

Storytelling and Dramatic Play
