Band

Mr. Doug Rowe completed his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education at Wingate University and his Master's degree in Percussion Performance at UNC School of the Arts. He is currently a music teacher in Union County Public Schools and a Professor of Percussion at Catawba College. Mr. Rowe is an active performer in many professional groups. He has served as principal percussionist of the Union Symphony Orchestra for the past 11 years and also serves as a substitute percussionist with the Rock Hill Symphony. In addition to being a performer, he has served as an instructor, arranger, composer, and clinician throughout North Carolina. Mr. Rowe currently serves as District 6 President in the North Carolina Music Educators Association. He is a proud artist of Salyers Percussion sticks and mallets and member of the Black Swamp Percussion Educator Network.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mrs. Taylor Price is a Director of Bands at Union Academy Charter School. Mrs. Price is a native of Union County and is a graduate of Parkwood High School and Wingate University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. During her time at Wingate, Mrs. Price studied conducting under Dr. Dawn Price and flute under Dr. Erinn Frechette. Upon graduation, Mrs. Price began her career as the band director at South Middle School in Lancaster, South Carolina. While working at South, Mrs. Price was also assistant band director at Lancaster High School where she worked with the marching band. Along with the accomplishment of building both of the band programs at South Middle and Lancaster High significantly, Mrs. Price was honored to be named Beginning Teacher of the Year at South Middle School for the 2021-2022 school year.

We are so excited you are considering joining band in 6th grade. You have come to the right place to get more information. Please note at Union Academy you can only join band in 6th grade. If you think you are interested in learning an instrument, 6th grade is the year to do it. Band will change your life forever. You will LOVE it (and so will your parents)! However, there are a lot of things to consider before signing up for band. It’s not an easy A class. There are time and financial commitments to consider. Please go through the steps below to find out more information about joining band.

Learning to play an instrument is hard enough... Students who start band on a quality instrument tend to learn faster and stay with it longer than students who start on an inferior instrument. Buying an instrument is an investment that will impact your band students' progress. I strongly suggest buying your instrument from a reputable music store like Music and Arts who provide students with quality instruments.

I can tell you countless nightmares of students who bought an instrument online, at a pawn shop, or from a large supermarket. Most have to replace this "bargain" instrument within a year. Please trust our experience and purchase/rent a quality instrument.
