What's Happening in UA High School Sports!

SPORTS ARE BACK AT UNION ACADEMY!

On Monday, June 8, 2020, the NCHSAA approved the end of the athletic dead period that was enacted on March 15, 2020 by Governor Roy Cooper in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  To allow for our return to athletics to begin on Monday, June 15, 2020, certain protocols were designed in accordance with state, county and NCHSAA restrictions and allow for a coordinated reopening following the initial stay at home order and may also be used if conditions dictate the need for increased restrictions in the future.  To ensure a safe and gradual return to athletics, you and your student athlete’s compliance is essential. Please read and comply with the following guidelines. Additionally, the return to play form MUST be completed and returned before your student athlete can participate in summer workouts.

The NCHSAA also voted that tryouts and mandatory practices cannot begin until at least September 1, 2020.  Additional information will be posted here as the dates are updated by the NCHSAA board.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Per state requirements, in order for students to participate in any workouts or tryouts for the upcoming year, an UPDATED PHYSICAL and a COMPLETED ATHLETIC PACKET must be on file. Please make sure all appropriate paperwork is up to date and submitted to the Athletic Trainer, Amber Edwards or Interim Athletic Director, Michelle Phifer.

In an effort to reduce the Earth's carbon footprint, the Union Academy Athletic Department has moved to an online portal for collection of the annual NCHSAA required athletic packet.  Instructions for submitting the athletic packet, the physical form, as well as a link to the "Athletic Clearance" site can be found below, or by accessing through the main website under Important Forms.

Due to the extraordinary circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in school closures, a one year emergency addition to the State Board of Education Policy, ATHL-001, Interscholastic Athletics, was approved by the State Board of Education on April 23, 2020.  This action states that any student athlete that has a physical that is dated on or after March 01, 2019 is granted an extension to participate through the end of the 2020-21 academic year without a new annual physical.  The Union Academy Athletic Department continues to recommend annual physicals however, if a student athlete's physical is dated after March 01, 2019, the physician's portion of the physical is NOT required to be uploaded.  The first 2 pages of the form (student athlete's health history) is STILL REQUIRED!

Please reach out to your child's coach, Michelle Phifer, Greg Gregory or Amber Edwards with any questions.

Union Academy High School Athletics is governed by the rules and regulations of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Union Academy is a member of the Southern Piedmont 1-A conference for football only, and a member of the PAC-7 Conference for all other sports. We offer a wide variety of male, female, and coed teams during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. For team participation, annual membership in the Cardinal Athletic Club is required. Each coach must have training and certifications offered through the National Federation of High Schools including but are not limited to CPR and Concussion certifications. This also includes national recognition in the "Heads Up" program by all football coaches, which focuses on safe practices and guidelines to prevent concussions.
