The members of the Union Academy Class of 2018 crossed the stage into a new chapter of their lives at their graduation ceremony Friday, June 1.
The day began with UA’s annual Walk of Champions, where seniors walked the halls of both Upper and Lower Campus to celebrate their accomplishments with the rest of the student body. The seniors then went to Lee Park Church to enjoy a graduation breakfast with their families and friends and ran through graduation practice to make sure the evening ceremony would go smoothly.
The graduation was a brief and sentimental ceremony with reflections from the senior class officers, valedictorian, salutatorian, Dr. Walters and Principal Zorn.
Student Council President Zach Dudas talked about his time at UA and encouraged his fellow graduates to take what they learned at Union Academy and make new experiences in the real world.
“I’d like for us to think of this as the beginning rather than the end” Dudas said. “The beginning of the next exciting stages in our lives, where we will then realize just how valuable Union Academy has been for each and every one of us. For our times here may be done, but our memories and experiences have just begun.”
UA Class of 2009 alumnus Ashley Jordan McBride was the commencement speaker for the event. She reflected on her own graduation from UA and encouraged the new graduates to use their character foundation to guide them through the rest of their lives.
“I am leaving you all tonight with the charge to take what has brought you to this moment- your three Cs- the Company you Keep, the Character you Possess, and the Choices you Make- and to allow those Cs to carry you forward” McBride said. “To choose good company, to maintain your character, and to make good choices. In doing so, you will be the best you can be, and you will change the world.”
After the graduates crossed the stage and turned their tassels, the Friends theme song “I’ll Be There For You” played throughout the auditorium and everyone was released to their families.
Union Academy congratulates the members of the Class of 2018 on their accomplishments, and wishes them nothing but success in the future.
“Our doors are always open” Dr. Walters said to the graduates. “Please walk through them. After you check in to the Lobby Guard.”
