July 3, 2020
Dear UA Families:
As Governor Cooper shared yesterday afternoon in his briefing, his team is not ready to share the plan for how and when NC public schools will reopen. Governor Cooper explained that his team will continue working with health experts to develop a plan to ensure schools operate in the safest way possible to protect students and staff. He said, “Let me be clear. We want our schools open for in-person instruction in August. The classroom is the best place for children to learn.” At UA, we agree and I would encourage all parents to click on the following article on the importance of getting students back to school: U.S. Pediatricians Call For In-Person School This Fall. Governor Cooper has asked that schools with start dates in July begin school remotely until a decision has been made for in-person learning.
In accordance with Governor Cooper’s recommendation, Union Academy will begin school remotely on our planned start date of Monday, July 27, 2020. Please know we are working diligently to prepare a detailed remote learning plan to share with parents next week. Our goal is to continue to deliver high quality on-line teaching until we are able to resume in-person instruction, hopefully in August.
I have reviewed the concerns and suggestions many of you have submitted through the reopening input email email@example.com and remote learning survey. Please continue to share with us any ideas and questions via this email address. I pledge to you to read every email.
As I shared with my leadership team during our June meetings, two words are vital for UA students to embrace if they are to develop into young men and women of character. These words are also essential for leadership and for effective parenting, especially during a crisis such as this pandemic: These words are humility and gratitude.
The wisest research scientists, physicians, public health officials, and leaders in the world have very different views on this pandemic, and specifically the best way to reopen schools. No one has a monopoly on knowing what is best. I ask for your patience as my team and I develop a thoughtful plan for Union Academy. I also hope you share my gratitude for being able to be a part of this very special school community.
You will hear from the three principals next week with the initial details on our remote learning plans for school that begins July 27.
