Monroe, NC - The Union Academy Marching Cardinals Band has been invited to perform in the 2019 Chicago Thanksgiving Parade on Thursday, November 28. Only ten high school bands are invited to participate nationally. The parade can be seen locally on WGN-TV at 9 a.m. Under the direction of Spencer Hinson, 44 members of this year’s marching band will perform marches from the five US military branches from the collection “Main Street America.” Students will also have the opportunity to visit area attractions such as The Bean, Chicago’s 360 view with Tilt!, and museums.
Chicago’s Thanksgiving Parade began in 1934 to lift the spirits of city residents during the Great Depression. Now it’s a holiday tradition in the Windy City and has become known as “Chicago’s Great Holiday Tradition.” The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade takes place on historic State Street, from Congress Parkway to Randolph Street, on Thanksgiving morning. The parade is televised LIVE on WGN America and WGN Television, available in approximately 80 million homes, and more than 300,000 people will line the streets to watch.
The UA Marching Cardinals Band was formed in 2014 and has grown each year and now includes 60 students. This year they placed 1st in class AAA at the Mustang Classic hosted by East Rowan High School.
