Mr. Jeff Starnes

I am so excited to begin this 2022-2023 school year!  I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge of science and how it pertains to our everyday life with our students.  When you think about it:  from the time you wake up in the morning, until you go to bed at night; everything we do and experience is Science!!!  It is my goal to teach students to view the world from this perspective.

I would like to share a little about myself, my family and how I found my way to Union Academy in February of 2021.  I have lived in Union County my whole life, as I was born in Charlotte and grew up in Indian Trail.  Sun Valley High was the school I graduated from in 1987.  From there I obtained the Inaugural Teaching Fellows Scholarship and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1991.  Trying to find a position for Middle Grades Education, I applied in Union and Stanly counties.  For two semesters I taught at West Stanly High School in various subjects.  The summer of 1993 proved to be life changing and my destiny for most of my life.  I accepted a position at Piedmont Middle School and taught Science, Social Studies, Math and Reading over the years.  I am extremely proud of the fact I taught 6th grade Science for 25 years.  My colleagues and I developed a team teaching approach that was known countywide.  May of 2020 our family's world was upended when my daughter, Lily, was diagnosed with Immature Metastatic Teratoma disease.  As a result I retired early to assist in her care.  After 4 surgeries, 2 rounds of chemo, and the wonders of Grace; I returned to education here at UA in February.  And here we are beginning my second full year teaching Science at UA.   Feel free to email, call or visit anytime.  We are UA!!!!
