Ms. Mikayla Marlow
Hello!
I began teaching at Union Academy in 2021, but my UA journey began back in 2001 when I started Kindergarten. I'm a UA "lifer," something I take to heart, and I am so excited to be here. Currently, I teach Honors English I and II. I am also one of the directors of Homework Club, an after-school study program for grades 5th-12th. I am a total book nerd (seriously, I have a book blog!), and I look forward to spreading my literary love to students.
I received my bachelor's degree in English Literature at Queen’s University of Charlotte. I served as our department's president for Sigma Tau Delta and was very active in our Creative Writing and Theater departments. I hope to combine these passions through my curriculum to teach integratively across the humanities. I received my Master of Arts in Literature and Children’s Literature at UNC Charlotte and published a creative thesis in the form of a YA fantasy novel. My philosophy is that anyone who can think can write, so part of my role will be encouraging students to put pen to paper and turn thoughts into art. I strongly believe literacy builds integrity and empathy, so character education will be at the center of every lesson taught in my room.
Prior to teaching at UA, I worked as a Level II certified peer and writing tutor during my undergraduate studies. I continued my work as a writing instructor during my graduate studies and went on to teach a writing course and a literature course at UNCC. I also worked for a music school where I taught voice lessons to all ages. My classroom teaching career began in the midst of the pandemic, so I love all things Canvas and I strive to incorporate some online learning platforms and strategies into my classroom to better prepare students for college and remote learning/working in this new, adaptable age we've entered into.
My door is always open for book talks, coffee breaks, tutoring, and anything your child needs to feel successful this year! I look forward to connecting with you all!
Supply List
-
All students will need:
- 1" Binder
- Notebook (designated for this class only)
- Charged UA Chromebook
- Pens/Pencils
Over the course of the year, students are required to complete independent and classroom readings. For independent reading, I will always allow time to check out books from the media center or from my classroom library. Purchasing books for independent reading is always welcome, but never required. Class novels, short stories, and other texts will be provided in PDF form or through a classroom set. I allow e-books, library books, borrowed books, used books, and new books for this class. Students also have access to the Union County Public Library with their school ID badge.
*E-readers are allowed in this class as long as they are used for reading only.
Canvas
-
Students will be utilizing Canvas as a means of communication, coursework, and a variety of other purposes.
The home page should be checked daily for all assigned work, reminders, deadlines, etc. The home page is a slideshow, so students may use the arrows to toggle back through each day's assignments for the duration of the entire year.
Units are organized by Modules.
Canvas is for assignment completion and written feedback only. All grades will be posted in PowerSchool, NOT the Canvas grade book.
