By the Student, For the Student Campaign Starts Soon

The annual Union Academy letter-writing campaign has a new name - and a new focus. This year, all UA students will be involved in a student-led initiative, By the Student, For the Student, which will support Union Academy’s current expansion project. The contributions we receive from this campaign directly benefit all students at Union Academy.

As you know, Union Academy is a tuition-free public school. But did you know that we receive about 25 percent less funding from the county and state than traditional public schools? That’s right, almost one-fourth less simply because we are a charter school. As a charter, we do not receive funding for new buildings, repairs, renovations or land acquisition.

In order to continue our growth and provide the best learning environment for our students, the Union Academy Foundation partners with the school and launches an annual appeal. Contributions received from this campaign directly benefit all students at Union Academy.

The purpose of this campaign is threefold. First, it is curriculum-based. Students will be taught the proper format for writing a business letter and addressing an envelope (and will receive a grade for their efforts). Second, students will learn how to ask for support for a cause (our school). Third, the campaign will make others more aware of our exceptional school and the great resource we are to this community.

Our goals this year are 100 percent student participation and to raise $52,000 for Union Academy. There will be incentives! The school level that raises the most money and the school level that has the most participation will receive a prize.

To help accomplish the goals of this initiative, we are asking all K-12 parents to provide us by Friday, Jan. 19, with a minimum of three names and addresses of personal acquaintances or relatives (friends, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.). In addition, we ask middle and high school parents to provide us with the name and address of one business. A personalized letter written by students and a pledge card will be mailed the week of Feb. 16 to the names and addresses you provide.

As always, We Are UA!
