UA: An Out-of-This-World Place to Learn

NEW INFORMATION FOR PARENTS WISHING TO VIEW THE ECLIPSE WITH THEIR STUDENTS:

Wednesday, Aug. 16 -- As you know, we are excited to share a once-in-a-lifetime experience with our students on Monday, Aug. 20, during the solar eclipse. We have more details about the school hours and shuttle times for that day below.

We know many of our families wish to watch the eclipse with their child/ren. We understand this, but have to also balance the limited space at Upper Campus due to construction, as well as the safety of our students, staff and families:

  • In order to fairly accommodate as many parents as possible, only one family member per student may come to UA to watch the eclipse.
  • Parking is not available at Upper Campus; therefore, all UA parents – whether you have a student at Lower or Upper Campus – must park at Lower Campus and ride a shuttle to Upper Campus.
  • Any parent who plans to ride the shuttle must stop by Lower Campus to sign a waiver to ride the shuttle. Waivers must be complete by this Friday, Aug. 18.
  • Siblings are not allowed to ride the shuttle.

  • Parents must park at Lower Campus by 1:30 p.m. in order to ride the shuttle at 1:45 p.m. Please allow time to park and board the shuttle. We’re also asking parents to carpool if possible, because spaces are limited.
  • After the viewing is complete, parents must ride the shuttle back to Lower Campus.

Please note: We do not have eclipse glasses reserved for parents, so please bring your own.

Due to the change in our schedule that day, Lower Campus carpool will release at 4 p.m. Carpool will run in the usual way, but some lanes will be blocked to allow buses to re-enter the lot from Upper Campus. We expect carpool to take longer, so please be patient.

Union Academy is an out-of-this-world place to learn. Our flexibility and innovation makes us different from traditional schools, which means we can provide once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to teach the whole child.

One of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities is coming up on Monday, Aug. 21, when the United States experiences a total solar eclipse. In our area, we’ll be at 98 percent totality.

We want to ensure this is a great experience for our students. All our teachers will be doing eclipse-related lessons leading up to the event, and we’re excited to report that the UA Foundation secured a donation of eclipse viewing glasses for every student and staff member!

We are also taking advantage of our flexibility and innovation to make changes to our schedule:

  • We are changing school hours to 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Lower Campus students will come to the Upper Campus for the eclipse viewing.
  • Before-school care will be offered to families who need it, starting at 7 a.m.
