Lower School Campus

Students must wear sneakers during P.E. Class.  Shorts are to be worn under skirts or jumpers.

Upper School Campus

During P.E. classes, students are required to wear P.E. t-shirts purchased through the school office.  Order forms are given to the students at the beginning of the school year.  P.E. shorts may be purchased individually but must be at least finger tip length.

PROMOTION POLICY

Union Academy is a North Carolina public school and will follow the promotion policies recommended by the Department of Public Instruction, but in conjunction with the mission and purposes as defined in the Union Academy Charter and approved by the State of North Carolina.  To be promoted to the next grade level in sequence at Union Academy, a student must meet the following criteria:

1.            The student will receive the recommendation of the teacher or teachers at his or her current grade level.  That recommendation will consider social, behavioral, and emotional development as well as academic and intellectual development.

2.            The student will achieve a passing grade on all State required End-of-Grade (EOG) tests and End-of-Course (EOC) tests.

3.            The student will achieve a score within one Grade Level Equivalent of current grade level year and month on Union Academy’s nationally recognized test - currently that test is the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).

4.            In cases where a child meets one or more, but not all, of the criteria, the headmaster (principal) and a member of the Exceptional Children’s staff will meet with the teacher to make a final recommendation regarding the student’s promotion.

5.            In all cases, the final decision with respect to promotion or retention will rest with the headmaster.

6.            All recommendations regarding children who qualify for Exceptional Children’s Services will be made in line with the particular qualifying disability and in conjunction with State and Federal laws and regulations.

For High School Students, the following criteria must be met for promotion consideration:

Ninth Grade

To be designated as a 10th Grade student, a student must have earned a grade of 70 (“D”) or above and completed five units of credit in courses which must include English I, a mathematics course (Integrated I, Algebra I, or higher), and three other units of credit.

Tenth Grade

To be designated as an 11th Grade student, a student must have earned a grade of 70 (“ D”) or above and completed ten units of credit in courses which must include English I and English II, two math courses, six other units of credit, and 30 hours of community service.

Eleventh Grade

To be designated as a 12th Grade student, an 11th Grade student must have earned a grade of 70 (“D”) or above and completed at least fifteen units of credit in courses which must include English I, II, III, three math courses, two social studies courses, two science courses, five other units of credit, and sixty total hours of community service.

Parents may request a meeting to discuss a recommendation regarding the promotion or retention of their child.  This meeting should include the parents, the teacher or teachers, and the headmaster.   If parents disagree with the final decision of the headmaster, the parent may request that the Union Academy Board of Directors address or review that decision.

SAFETY

In accordance with state policies and local public safety authorities, Union Academy has developed a “safe school” policy. Staff members are trained in the event of any type of emergency including: fire, bomb threat, lockdown, medical emergency, severe weather, etc. If you have any questions, please ask your child’s teacher.

SCHOOL CLOSING/INCLEMENT WEATHER

Union Academy will announce the intent to close school on the air, separately from Union County Public School system, no later than 6:00 AM the day of the closing. We will make every attempt to announce the evening before, although this is not always possible.  In addition, the phone system at the school Lower Campus (704-283-5678) and Upper Campus (704-238-8883) will include a message announcing the intent and changes will be listed on our website at www.unionacademy.org. The absence of any announcement to the contrary will mean that school is in session.

Any day that you feel it inadvisable to bring your child to school due to weather conditions or any danger, by all means call the school.  We will not punish your child's attendance record just because weather conditions prevent you from coming.

Union Academy will announce its intentions to local TV channels. These channels include:

WCNC – Channel 6 (wcnc.com)                                  WBTV – Channel 3 (wbtv.com)

News14 – Channel 14 (News14.com)              WSOC–Channel 9 (GoCarolinas.com)

Radio Stations:  99.3 FM, 104.7 FM, 107.9 FM, 1110 A.M.

If UA opens in the morning, and inclement weather develops after school begins, the Academy will remain open until 3:00 PM, or until the pick up of all students is complete.  We cannot control the weather, but will provide a safe environment for the children until the parent/guardian can make appropriate arrangements for pick up.

In all cases of bad weather, we respect the judgment of the individual parents with regard to your decision to take your child early from school.

STUDENT DRIVERS

Students who operate a private motor vehicle on the Union Academy campus must obtain and complete a Student Parking Permit Application.  This application must be signed by the student, the parent/guardian, and the Headmaster.  The application must be submitted to the front office along with $25.00 parking fee prior to driving to school, the required insurance information, and a copy of the student’s drivers license.  If a student drives more than one vehicle, all vehicles must be registered with the school.  There will be a $5.00 charge for replacement tags.  Failure to display a parking tag is a $5.00 fine.

Union Academy is not responsible for lost or stolen articles kept in private motor vehicles.  Therefore, it is suggested that all vehicles remain locked.  Additionally, Union Academy will not be responsible for damages to vehicles that are parked on school property.  Damaged vehicles parked on school property should be reported to the front office and law enforcement officials.

The following rules apply:

  • After leaving the parking lot, students may not visit the parking lot without permission from administration until their dismissal time.
  • Students must park in the numbered space that corresponds with their parking sticker number. If someone is in your space, you are to park in the front gravel parking lot and notify an administrator immediately so that the appropriate action can be taken.
  • Trash in your space is your responsibility- NO EXCUSES!
  • If it becomes evident that driving to school is causing you to be late on a continuous basis or if your car is being used to leave school without permission, then your privilege to drive to school will be suspended for 30 days.
  • No students are allowed to park in the bus parking area at any time.
  • Any suggested or written regulations about parking are subject to change at the discretion of the administration.
  • Speed limit on campus is 10 mph.  Speeding will result in the loss of driving privileges.
  • Upon arriving at school in a private vehicle, students must immediately exit from their vehicle and enter the school building.
  • Students are not to loiter in the parking areas at any time.
  • Once at school, students may not return to the student parking areas without an administrative or staff escort.
  • Parking violations such as parking out of space, taking up two spaces, or parking in prohibited areas will result in a $10.00 fine.  More than three parking violations results in parking privilege being suspended for one school year.  Permits may be revoked at any time by the Division Head or the Headmaster in the same manner as suspensions are invoked.
  • Violations of this policy constitute a violation of the discipline code.

State laws governing driving in school zones are in effect on campus.  Violation of speed limits, established traffic patterns, or reckless driving on or off campus will be reported to parents and may result in loss of on-campus parking privileges. Additional violations include, but are not limited to failure to properly register a vehicle, repeated morning tardies, leaving campus without authorization, and taking another student off campus without permission.  All violations are punishable by fines, loss of driving privileges, ISS, OSS, Saturday work detail, or a combination of any of these.  A parent or guardian will be contacted for ALL violations.

Unless an administrator and the activity/team coach approves, students are expected to travel with the team or group to and from school sponsored events.  If a situation arises in which a student needs to travel home or to an additional destination following the event, a written request is to be signed and on record with the Athletic or Activities Director.
