STARS & CHAMPS
Successfully Targeting A Reading Student & Community Helpers Assisting Math Practice
STARS & CHAMPS was implemented for Union Academy students who require additional assistance outside of the classroom improving reading comprehension and math skills. This program partners academically disadvantaged children with teachers, parents and individuals within the community to bolster achievement gaps for qualifying students.
This tutoring program is based on North Carolina curriculum objectives with reinforcement strategies based on students’ learning needs. A variety of instructional materials are used to incorporate auditory, visual, and kinesthetic modalities in each lesson to address individual learning styles. Students are matched with a trained employee, parent, or community volunteer who works through a specialized learning plan – coordinated and managed by the STARS & CHAMPS director at Union Academy – for improving basic academic skills. Students are served two to four sessions per week. Student proficiency is monitored through mastery checks, pre- and post-assessment tools including EOG, IOWA, and DIBELS. Communication takes place between the program coordinators and the regular classroom teacher on a weekly basis to best meet individual student needs. Union Academy supports North Carolina’s Strategic Plan for Excellent Schools with local flexibility to achieve mastery of core skills and high accountability for achievement.
