Admissions

Admission to Union Academy is by public lottery, generally held in early spring of each year.  To enter a child in the lottery, a parent must attend a Union Academy Information Session and complete an application for the child.  Applications can be obtained only at one of the Information Sessions.

See the Public Lottery page for Information Session dates.

At the lottery, names are drawn until all open spaces are filled.  Remaining names are then drawn and placed on a waiting list in the order in which they were drawn.  Positions that become available after the lottery are filled from the waiting list generated at the lottery drawing.

Students currently enrolled at Union Academy are assured of positions for the next school year provided they follow the procedures for holding their spaces.  Once a child in a family is enrolled in Union Academy, the siblings are given preference for enrollment the following school year depending on total enrollment and number of spaces available.

Prior to admittance, accepted students will be required to:

1.    meet all health requirements set forth by the State of North Carolina and exhibit records as such;
2.    submit to an interview which will include the parent(s) or guardian, student applying, the Headmaster and/or any others designated by the Headmaster or Board of Directors as members of an interview committee;
3.    sign a Partnership Agreement Form stating that the mission of the school and expectations for all parties are fully understood;
4.    submit to placement exams to determine grade level (not acceptance);
5.    supply a transcript of grades and standardized test scores from the prior or current school year; and
6.    submit an “Affidavit of Student in Good Standing”*

These expectations must be completed in a timely manner.  New students will have two calendar weeks to complete this process.  After this time a student may forfeit his/her position at Union Academy to the next person on the waiting list.

*Union Academy reserves the right to refuse admission to students who have been expelled or suspended.  It may, however, grant acceptance on a case-by-case basis.  These decisions will require careful consideration and detailed communication with the previous school and, perhaps, the LEA.  In such cases the two-week period for acceptance may be extended.
